Vocal range

I'd like to say I'm enjoying the course however I have a problem with my range. For instance when trying to sing the song "Shake It Up" I feel I need to start in chest voice and get the higher notes in head voice, which I can do. However, my chest voice sounds just awful. Its dull, flat and uninspiring. So if I try starting in a higher range ie in head voice, it sounds a lot better but then I can't reach the higher notes. They become weak, squeaky and strained, and are ridiculously high. So my question is how can I improve the quality and richness of my chest voice?
