What would you say should be the first things a complete newbie at singing should do? I was thinking to find my vocal range and work on my breathing before doing anything else, is this the right thing to do??

That's a great idea! I do encourage you to work on songs from the very beginning - just choose songs that are an easy fit. Here's a video with easy songs for beginners, and here's another video on common beginner mistakes. I encourage you to download an ear training app like Functional ear trainer so you can receive feedback on your pitch accuracy without a teacher present as well!
