I'm australian and speak with quite a low voice often in vocal fry. Is that bad for singing? Should I try and speak higher?

Not necessarily! Some people speak quite differently than they sing. If you feel the low pitch and vocal fry are fatiguing your voice, I'd consider attempting slightly higher pitched speech. But typically a person's natural manner of speaking is healthy!
